A musty smell in your house can linger even after cleaning. Most of us have walked into a home and noticed it before we could name it. Not a bad smell exactly. Just a heaviness in the air. A faint sourness in a room that never quite goes away no matter how many candles are lit or sprays are applied.

We assume it’s cosmetic. A ventilation issue. Old carpet. Something the last residents left behind.

Sometimes it is. But often, that musty smell in your house is your home’s air quality trying to tell you something.

What a musty smell in your house actually signals

The human nose is remarkably good at detecting certain compounds at very low concentrations, particularly the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and microbial off-gases produced by mold colonies, bacterial growth, and organic decomposition.

When a musty smell persists despite cleaning, when it returns after you’ve washed, sprayed, and aired out a space, it usually means the source is still present. You’ve addressed the symptom. The cause is still there.
