Swine Barn Sanitation: 3 Myths vs. the Facts

Swine barn sanitation comes with a few persistent myths that even good producers believe, mostly because they’ve never had a reason to question them. One outbreak of PRRS or PED can set a barn back for months, and the margins in swine production don’t leave much room for a slow recovery, so it’s worth sorting out what’s actually true. This is also part of why Brent has been spending more time in swine barns lately, since a lot of what we’ve learned solving biofilm problems in poultry and food facilities applies directly here too.

Swine Barn Sanitation Myth vs. Fact

Here are three of the most common myths we run into, and what’s actually going on underneath each one.

Myth 1: If a barn looks clean, it’s sanitized

Fact: Hog barns are a tough environment for any disinfection program. High humidity, organic material everywhere, and animals that are constantly in contact with floors, walls, and each other. That combination is exactly what lets bacteria and viruses build up in places routine washdowns never fully reach, like drain channels, gaps under equipment, and porous flooring, all while the barn looks perfectly clean from a walk-through.

Myth 2: Enough chemical disinfectant reaches everywhere

Fact: Standard disinfectants work fine on a flat, visible, dry surface. A hog barn does not offer many of those. Organic material on surfaces can actually shield pathogens from chemical contact, which is why a barn can look clean and still carry a heavy pathogen load. This is the same penetration problem we’ve written about in food facilities, just with different animals and different stakes. Adding more chemical doesn’t fix a contact problem, it just uses more chemical.

A barn that looks clean and a barn that is actually disinfected are two different things. The gap between them is usually where the next outbreak starts.

Myth 3: A more thorough treatment always means more downtime

Fact: This is where swine barn sanitation actually gets easier, not harder. Gaseous ozone works as a gas, which means it fills the barn the way air does, reaching corners, drains, and equipment surfaces that a hose and a chemical sprayer simply cannot get to consistently. Because ozone destroys pathogens through oxidation rather than chemical exposure, it doesn’t rely on soaking time or precise chemical concentrations the way traditional disinfectants do. A barn can be treated between move-outs without extending downtime, and there’s no chemical residue left behind for the next group of animals.

What biosecurity guidance already says about this

It’s worth noting none of this is a new idea we’re introducing. The USDA’s swine biosecurity guidance has long emphasized that cleaning and disinfection need to reach beyond visible surfaces, particularly for hardy pathogens that survive in organic material.
